In 2010 and 2012 Susan gave the course on Ecology to Heritage Programme students in their third year. The course involved 33 contact hours: lectures, laboratory sessions, computer classes and field work. Students were given assignments for continuous assessment and there was a 3-hour final examination. Susan was also Special Needs Tutor in GIS, and undertook invigilating.
UCC – University College Cork
In 2012 Susan contributed to a GIS course given to MSc students as guest lecturer. She gave an example of how GIS can be used for research into climate change effects on different habitats and sea level rise.
University of the West Indies
Susan was University Lecturer in the Botany Department 1986-1990, lecturing in Ecology, Plant Ecology and Applied Ecology. Courses were at different levels, all involving lecturing, laboratory sessions and field skills. Students were obliged to participate in a five-day field course. Susan was in charge of the Departmental Herbarium and advances students were introduced to herbarium techniques.
The Nature Conservancy (USA)
Susan participated as a Trainer for Conservation Training Week, both in Dominican Republic and in Honduras. This involved both lecturing and workshops in the methodology of Rapid Ecological Assessment and how satellite images are interpreted to make maps of land cover. These are then used together with other biodiversity information both from the literature and field work to contribute to protected areas planning and management.
USAID and UNDP
Susan was consultant in training sessions for conservation planning and management in Central America and the Caribbean. Mainly her input focused on skills training for Government and NGO staff in Rapid Ecological Assessment and the interpretation of imagery for land cover maps. This was in the context of planning and implementing conservation of protected areas.
